Hydrant Flushing

HydrantThe Arcadia Water Utility maintains about 230 hydrants. Hydrant flushing is an essential part of our system maintenance program to continue to provide you, our customers, with high-quality water. The flushing or "cleansing" operation involves systematically opening of hydrants  to force the water through the pipes at a high velocity, to clean out any accumulated minerals and deposits until the water is clear.

How will hydrant flushing affect my water service?

When crews are working in your area flushing the water distribution system, your water supply will not be interrupted. You may notice a temporary drop in water pressure or discolored water, this is normal.

Hydrant FlushingFlushing operations may lead to discolored water, which can be drawn into your home or business if the water is used during or immediately after flushing. The discoloration is caused by mineral particles being dislodged from the water main which can stain porcelain and laundry. Avoid running your tap water and using the washing machine or dishwasher while crews are flushing in your area.

If discolored water occurs, simply run the cold water at full flow for a few minutes until it is clear. This will allow the sediment to work its way through your pipes.  No health hazards are associated with discolored water from hydrant flushing. Make sure your water is clear before doing laundry or other projects for which discolored water could cause problems.

Hydrant FlushingThere may be a temporary drop in water pressure during hydrant flushing. If pressure or volume seems low after hydrant flushing, check your faucet screens for trapped particles.

What are the benefits of hydrant flushing?
• It draws in fresh water to low flow areas.
• It improves the water quality and removes mineral deposits from our water mains.
• It ensures that all hydrants are functioning properly for fire protection.
